Music and Health: Working Closely with People
In healthcare and living settings, music provides a moment of respite, brings back memories, and creates a space for connection.
Since 2014, the Flâneries Musicales de Reims has been offering musical performances to hospitalized children and adults, seniors, their families, and the healthcare professionals who care for them. The artists visit the various wards to provide an experience tailored to the setting, the pace of care, and everyone’s availability.
In settings marked by pain, anxiety, or isolation, a concert can provide a moment of solace, evoke a shared emotion, and create a new topic of conversation among patients, their loved ones, and caregivers.
An initiative carried out in several schools
In 2025, eight visits were documented at the Reims University Hospital and the Godinot Institute: at the Roux nursing home, the Maison des Adolescents, and SUPADO; in the hematology and nephrology departments; at the Maison des Parents and the Children’s Hospital; at the Wilson nursing home; and at the Godinot Institute.
Lightweight formations capable of reaching out to audiences
Duos and trios allow artists to perform up close to the audience. Guitar, vocals, accordion, flute, saxophone, piano, violin, or cello give each performance its own unique flavor. In 2025, young musicians—many of whom were from the Paris National Conservatory of Music and Dance—took part in these performances.
The success of a project depends on dialogue with the institutions. The choice of venue, duration, musical training, repertoire, and hosting conditions are determined with consideration for the audiences and the realities of the service.
