Romain descharmes biography

A musician recognized by his peers, pianist Romain Descharmes distinguishes himself as much in concert with orchestra as in recital or chamber music.

In 2006, he was awarded the First Grand Prize at the Dublin International Competition, which led to recitals on several prestigious stages: Carnegie Hall in New York, Wigmore Hall in London, Forbidden City Hall in Beijing, National Concert Hall in Dublin... And since his highly acclaimed debut with the Orchestre de Paris (2012), he has established himself as a new talent on the French piano scene.

He was then invited back for several series of concerts with the Orchestre de Paris (P. Järvi and I. Metzmacher), as well as with the Orchestres National de Lyon (L. Slatkin), National du Capitole de Toulouse (T. Sokhiev & A. Altinoglu), National d'Ile-de-France (T. Otaka), Bordeaux Aquitaine (F. Gabel), Mulhouse Symphony (P. Davin), Aarhus Symphony Orchestra (M. Soustrot), Orchestre Symphonique de Québec (E. Mazzola), Malmö Symphony Orchestra (M. Soustrot), Nancy Opera Orchestra, Caen Symphony Orchestra...

He is a guest at festivals such as Piano aux Jacobins, La Roque d'Anthéron, Esprit du piano, Chambord, Colmar, Menton, Sully-sur-Loire, la Vézère, Cordes sur Ciel, Gand, Sceaux, Radio France Montpellier, and also gives concerts at the Théâtre du Châtelet, au Trident in Cherbourg, Théâtre du Vésinet, Salle Cortot in Paris, Salle Poirel in Nancy, Opéra de Lille, and as part of the Belle Saison program (concerts at Bouffes du Nord in Paris, Méjan, Béziers, Coulommiers).

Abroad, he has given recitals in Istanbul, London, Luxembourg, Essaouira, at the Arties Festival in India, the Cervantino Festival in Mexico and the Bemus Festival in Serbia, and at the Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth. He also performed at the Berlin Philharmonic with the Orchestre Français des Jeunes conducted by Dennis Russell Davies as part of the Young Euro Classic festival.

Romain Descharmes is a pianist sought after as a chamber musician for his attentiveness, sensitivity and broad knowledge of repertoire ranging from sonatas to large ensembles. He is a member of the Talweg Trio alongside Sébastien Surel and Eric-Maria Couturier, and performs regularly with artists such as the Quatuor Ebène, Diotima and Danel, Sarah Nemtanu, Pierre Fouchenneret, Henri Demarquette, François Salque and Lise Berthaud.

An eclectic musician, he is a member of the Mosalini-Terruggi cuarteto, and also plays with Quai N°5, with whom he has recorded two albums for Decca-Universal and performed at some of Paris's biggest venues (the Bataclan, the Cigale, the Européen, the Café de la Danse).

Romain Descharmes' discography - widely praised by the critics - includes solo recordings of Brahms, Ravel, Fauré & Scriabine, and the complete Beethoven sonatas for piano and violin with Pierre Fouchenneret. As part of his ongoing collaboration with the Palazetto Bru Zane, he recorded the Dubois Sonata and Marie Jaëll's First Concerto with the Orchestre National de Lille. He has also recorded the complete works for piano and orchestra by Saint-Saëns with the Malmö Symfoni Orchestra.

At the same time, he is deeply committed to teaching and transmission, and teaches piano at the Paris CRR.
