A versatile conductor in perpetual search of new experiences, Mathieu Romano draws on his extensive knowledge of solo voices, choir and orchestra to tackle all genres, from baroque to symphonic and contemporary music, equally at ease on stage or in the opera pit.
During his Master's degree in conducting at the CNSM de Paris, he benefited from the advice of conductors such as François-Xavier Roth, Pierre Boulez, Susanna Mälkki and Zsolt Nagy. His career then took him to work as assistant conductor with David Zinman, Dennis Russell Davies, François-Xavier Roth, Paul Agnew and Marc Minkowski.
He works with ensembles such as Les Siècles, RIAS Kammerchor, Orchestre de chambre de Paris, Orchestre Français des Jeunes, NFM Choir, Orchestre des Pays de la Loire, Latvian Radio Choir, Orchestre de Caen, Yellow Socks Orchestra and Chœur de Radio France. He also conducts opera productions, notably at the Opéra-Comique (with the Orchestre de chambre de Paris, Les Frivolités Parisiennes and the Maîtrise Populaire de l'Opéra-Comique), as well as contemporary projects with the Ensemble Itinéraire.
In 2022, he became director of a project to develop and network the vocal arts in the Hauts-de-France region, and musical director of the Lille Opera Choir.
With the Aedes ensemble, of which he is founder and artistic director, he performs in the major musical seasons. His rich discography has been acclaimed by audiences and critics alike.
Involved in accessibility and music education initiatives, it notably led a DEMOS orchestra in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region from 2017 to 2020. It also initiates training initiatives for amateur musicians, children and young talent, notably as part of its presence in the Hauts-de-France region, and more specifically as part of a privileged partnership with the Abbey of Saint-Riquier and the Somme département.
For his achievements as a musician, he was named Chevalier dans l'ordre des Arts et Lettres.
