Biography of the Armenonville
L’Armenonville is a tango ensemble founded in 2010 by violinist Romain de Mesmay. It was born out of a desire to blend Argentine tangos with French chanson tangos in *Vagabondage en tangos*, a show that combines humor and poetry, featuring actress Emeline Bayart.
The Armenonville owes its name to a hunting lodge in the Bois de Boulogne that served as the model for a famous cabaret in Buenos Aires where Carlos Gardel, nicknamed “El Francesito,” made his debut in the 1910s.
Armenonville’s repertoire then shifted toward classical music and film scores, and eventually toward the idea of taking listeners on a journey through tango. The album *Tour du monde en tangos* was released in 2019. It features tangos from Iceland to Argentina, including stops in Turkey and Japan.
Since 2010, L’Armenonville has given more than 200 concerts in France and across Europe. The group performs at tango balls (La Lokura in Innsbruck, Tarbes en tangos, Dutch International Tango Week, etc.) as well as at concerts. In 2025, Armenonville released a new album titled *Est-ce ainsi?* featuring singer Elsa Favier, revisiting the tango repertoire of French chanson. The album’s title refers to the song *Est-ce ainsi que les hommes vivent?* by Léo Ferré and Aragon, reimagined as a tango.
L’Armenonville is collaborating with the dance company Les arts sensibles, led by choreographer Coralie Corredor. The musicians are participating in *Gracias, le Bal*, an inclusive performance featuring dancers with intellectual disabilities. L’Armenonville is also presenting a cabaret program with circus artist Valentin Bellot and dancer-origami artist Angélique Cormier.
